GREENFIELD — A Greenfield man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the 2009 rape of a Salinas woman after DNA evidence identified him as the suspect more than a decade later.
Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni announced that Juan Antonio Garcia Jimenez, 42, was sentenced July 16 after pleading guilty to forcible rape and admitting a special allegation that he committed the offense during the commission of a first-degree burglary.
According to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office, Salinas police responded Dec. 1, 2009, to the victim’s home after she called for help, reporting that someone was inside her residence.
The woman told investigators she had been decorating for Christmas with her 18-month-old son when Jimenez, whom she had never seen before, entered the home. Prosecutors said Jimenez threatened to kill the child if she did not comply with his demands.
Authorities said Jimenez forced the woman into a bedroom, struck her in the face, forced her to orally copulate him, then strangled and raped her. The victim was eventually able to fight him off, and Jimenez fled the scene.
The woman underwent a sexual assault examination at a hospital, where DNA evidence was collected. The samples were analyzed by the California Department of Justice and entered into the Combined DNA Index System, or CODIS, a national law enforcement DNA database used to identify suspects and link criminal investigations.
In 2023, a DNA match in CODIS identified Jimenez as the suspect, according to prosecutors.
The District Attorney’s Office said investigators with its Cold Case Task Force assisted in the renewed investigation. The task force was established in July 2020 to investigate and prosecute unsolved homicides and other violent crimes throughout Monterey County.
The investigation also received support through a $535,000 grant awarded in January 2022 by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance. The grant funds forensic testing and investigative work in cold cases involving DNA evidence, prosecutors said, and helped the Cold Case Task Force pursue the case.
