California Rodeo adds Legacy Team Roping event

SALINAS — California Rodeo Salinas will make history this year by becoming the first Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association-sanctioned rodeo in the nation to host a Legacy Team Roping competition.

Modeled after the Legacy Steer Roping event, the new competition recognizes veteran team ropers who continue to compete at a high level. Eligible contestants must be at least 50 years old and entered in the California Rodeo Salinas PRCA Team Roping competition. Ten teams have entered the inaugural event and will compete for a separate purse and California Rodeo Salinas championship buckles.

“Team roping has always been an important part of our rodeo’s history and identity,” said California Rodeo Salinas President Bob Eggers. “We’re honored to be the first PRCA rodeo to offer the Legacy Team Roping and recognize the talented competitors who have dedicated decades to this sport. These athletes continue to perform at an elite level, and we know our fans will enjoy watching them compete for this historic championship.”

Contestants will not rope additional cattle. Instead, their times from the California Rodeo Salinas Team Roping competition will determine Legacy Team Roping standings and payouts. The event includes a separate entry fee, a purse with $5,000 in added money and championship buckles for the winners.

The 116th California Rodeo Salinas will take place July 16-19 at the Salinas Sports Complex. For more information, visit CARodeo.com or call the Rodeo Office at 831-775-3100.
