SOLEDAD — City of Soledad has canceled its annual Fourth of July fireworks show this year, citing budget constraints and the need to prioritize funding for essential city services.
In a statement posted June 29, city officials acknowledged the decision may disappoint residents.
“We know many in our community were looking forward to a Fourth of July fireworks show this year, and we understand that the news that the City of Soledad will not have a fireworks show may be disappointing,” the city said.
According to the city, a 20-minute fireworks display would have cost approximately $25,000.
“After careful consideration, the City of Soledad chose to prioritize those funds toward maintaining essential city services and meeting the community’s ongoing needs,” the statement said.
In a video accompanying the announcement, City Manager Megan Hunter said the decision was made because of financial limitations.
“Unfortunately, due to budgetary constraints, we had to eliminate the fireworks show,” Hunter said. “We are looking to put funding to other community priorities, such as public safety, the fire department services, and recreation and parks upgrades.”
The announcement comes weeks after Soledad voters rejected Measure A in the June election. The measure would have authorized an annual parcel tax to help fund fire and emergency medical services, including staffing, equipment, training and disaster preparedness.
Although the fireworks display has been canceled, the city’s annual Fourth of July celebration will still take place from noon to 6 p.m. at Soledad Little League Park. Organized by the 4th of July Committee, the free event will feature live entertainment, food, games, family activities and prizes.
Organizers had previously announced that this year’s celebration would not include either a fireworks show or a parade, instead focusing on “a safe and enjoyable gathering focused on community, entertainment and family fun.”
The city’s announcement drew mixed reactions on social media, with some residents expressing disappointment over the cancellation while others supported the decision to direct limited funding toward essential services.
Residents seeking a traditional fireworks display will have nearby options. King City’s annual fireworks show is scheduled for 9 p.m. on July 3 at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds, while Greenfield’s display is set for 9 p.m. on July 4 at Patriot Park.
