GREENFIELD — A Soledad man was arrested May 5 after Greenfield police officers reportedly found a loaded handgun inside his vehicle during an investigation on Ninth Street.

Officers with the Greenfield Police Department responded shortly after 8 p.m. to the 100 block of Ninth Street following “a report of a man with a firearm,” according to police.

The reporting party provided information that helped officers identify the suspect as 35-year-old Michael Thompson Olivas of Soledad, along with the vehicle he was associated with, police said. Officers contacted and detained Olivas.

“During a search of the vehicle, officers located a loaded Glock handgun,” Greenfield police stated in a news release. The firearm was seized as evidence.

Olivas was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail on suspicion of possession of an unregistered firearm and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

“A prohibited person is someone who is legally restricted from owning or possessing firearms due to certain criminal convictions or court orders,” Greenfield police said in the release.

Police said Olivas has a 2023 conviction for brandishing a replica firearm and is currently subject to a criminal protective order prohibiting him from possessing firearms.

The police department encouraged community members to continue reporting suspicious activity, stating, “If you see something, say something!”
