The mission at Mee Memorial has always extended beyond delivering high quality care. As a rural healthcare system, we also serve as a major local employer. From clinical staff to maintenance professionals, housekeeping teams and surgeons, our organization supports hundreds of jobs that help local families thrive and stay healthy.

In rural areas like ours, the need for skilled healthcare professionals continues to grow. That is why we are deepening our commitment to building programs and pathways that help students explore a future in healthcare.

Our Pathway Program and High School Student Volunteer Program help students discover a variety of career options, while the Nursing Assistant Training Program, in partnership with South Monterey County Joint Union High School District (SMCJUHD), offers on site clinical training that turns hospital hallways into classrooms.

Nursing Assistant Training Program (NATP):

In April, Mee Memorial welcomed the first cohort of 11 students participating in the Nursing Assistant Training Program. The program was approved by the state in September and launched in March of this year. It is led by Virgie Ponce, RN, BSN, DSD, with the help of Mee Memorial’s manager of nursing administration, Consuelo Hernandez. Students complete their clinical training at Mee Memorial, attending four evenings per week in our Skilled Nursing Unit.

Student Pathway for Healthcare Internship Program:

The Student Pathway for Healthcare Internship Program (Golden State Pathway Program) is an initiative designed to introduce King City students to a variety of healthcare careers. It allows local students to observe professionals in action and learn about a wide range of roles and departments. This experience can be eye opening, inspiring students to envision a future in healthcare right here in their own community. Educators tell us the program deepens students’ understanding of healthcare and strengthens their confidence in professional settings.

High School Volunteer Program:

Volunteering builds confidence, fosters a sense of purpose, and provides a deeper understanding of what it means to serve others. Our high school student volunteers bring energy, curiosity, and compassion to our campus, and in return, they gain invaluable experience. Whether assisting staff or spending time with patients, student volunteers have become a valued part of our Mee Memorial community, and for many, it is the first step on a career path. Students interested in volunteering should reach out to their school for information.

We believe that investing in the next generation is the most powerful way to build a healthier future, opening doors for students who may not have otherwise considered a career in healthcare. This investment also has a broader economic impact, helping ensure our healthcare system and community remain strong and resilient for years to come. Ultimately, we want students in South County to see healthcare as a rewarding career path and to know they do not have to leave their community to build a meaningful future.

Mee Memorial Healthcare System is proud to partner with local schools to help grow the next generation of healthcare leaders in South Monterey County.
