GONZALES — A 66-year-old Gonzales man was arrested on suspicion of murder Friday night after calling 911 to report that his wife was bleeding, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency dispatchers received the call at about 9:27 p.m. on Feb. 13. Deputies responded to a residence in the 28000 block of Carr Road, just outside the city limits of Gonzales.

When deputies arrived, they found an adult female suffering from a severe laceration, the Sheriff’s Office said. Fire and ambulance personnel began life-saving measures and transported her to a local trauma center, where she later died from her injuries.

The victim was identified as Carmen Vega Tapia, 60, of Gonzales.

Detectives detained the caller, identified as Pablo Villasenor, 66, of Gonzales, and transported him for questioning. Authorities said detectives observed that Villasenor was bleeding and determined he had sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He was treated at a local hospital and later released.

Investigators later served a search warrant at the residence and recovered a firearm and a knife believed to have been used in the incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Villasenor was booked into the Monterey County Jail on suspicion of murder.

The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office.
