GONZALES — The defending Central Coast Section Division IV champion Gonzales Spartans kicked off the pre-season with home wins against Pacific Grove, Ceiba and Hollister.
Last Monday at Dick Force Stadium, the Spartans took a 5-0 halftime with three goals by Jorge Uribe, one goal by Samuel Ochoa and a goal by Jorge Lara. Gonzales completed the scoring against the Pacific Grove Breakers with a second half goal by Kevin Tavarez to win by a 6-0 tally.
The following night, Gonzales downed the Ceiba Spartans 2-0. Ochoa, a freshman, scored his second goal of the season and Sebastian Ramirez scored his first goal.

On Saturday afternoon, the Spartans hosted the Hollister Haybalers and pulled out a 1-0 victory. Jorge Uribe scored the winning goal at the 20-minute mark of the first half off an assist by Samuel Ochoa. Goalie Luis Cabada finished the game with eight saves.
“Hollister is an A Division team and we knew we would have to play well to beat them,” said Gonzales head coach Miguel Vidauri. “It feels pretty good to be 3-0 to start the season, but we will have some more good competition this week, including state champion Everett Alvarez.”
Gonzales hosted Everett Alvarez on Tuesday night (after press deadlines) and will host the Greenfield Bruins on Thursday. Next Monday, the Spartans will host the Rancho San Juan Trailblazers of Salinas.
