SALINAS VALLEY — The start of the winter high school sports season has begun with games scheduled in boys’ and girls’ basketball, soccer and wrestling.
Boys’ basketball began Tuesday night with Gonzales at Harbor and King City at Templeton. On Saturday, the Soledad Aztecs will host the Marina Mariners.
In girls’ basketball games this week, Gonzales played at Harbor on Tuesday night and the King City girls hosted St. Francis. Soledad hosted St. Francis on Monday and concludes the week by hosting the Pacific Collegiate Pumas.
In boys’ soccer, Gonzales has a busy week as they hosted Pacific Grove on Monday and Ceiba on Tuesday, and will host the Hollister Haybalers on Saturday at 1 p.m. Greenfield hosted Salinas High on Tuesday night, while King City played at Atascadero on Monday and will compete Wednesday at North Salinas.
The Soledad girls’ soccer team hosted the Alisal Trojans on Tuesday.
King City High School girls’ wrestling team competed at the Pacific Coast Athletic League Jamboree on Saturday in Watsonville. Although the matches were considered scrimmages, the athletes gained valuable experience against other teams.
Notable finishes included: Shyrah Jackson winning first with three wins by pin; Makayla Montoya earning second with two wins and one loss; Sophia Garcia placing second with two wins and one loss; and Elena Herandez Carreno taking fourth with two wins and two losses.
On Saturday, Dec. 6, the King City varsity boys’ wrestling team will participate in the Peninsula Invitational at Half Moon Bay High School.
