GREENFIELD — Several community members in Greenfield had their catalytic converters stolen overnight on Oct. 14, according to Greenfield Police Department.
Similar thefts were also reported in other South Monterey County cities, including Soledad and King City.
A catalytic converter is part of a vehicle’s exhaust system that helps reduce harmful emissions. Thieves target them because they contain valuable metals, such as platinum, palladium and rhodium.
Greenfield Police Department is following up on leads, including home and city camera surveillance. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the department at 831-385-8311.
The department also provided the following safety tips:
- Park in well-lit areas or secured garages when possible;
- Install and activate vehicle alarms or motion sensor lights;
- Consider engraving or etching converters with the vehicle’s VIN; and
- Report any suspicious activity or sounds, especially at night.
