SALINAS VALLEY — Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority is holding a Tire Amnesty Event from Sept. 2-30. Residents can dispose of their used tires for free at three participating facilities: Madison Lane Recycling & HHW Facility in Salinas, Johnson Canyon Landfill in Gonzales and Jolon Road Transfer Station in King City. This event offers a convenient and cost-free way to responsibly dispose of old tires.
MURAL PROJECT
SALINAS — United Way Monterey County (UWMC) is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony to launch the Community Impact Center Mural Project on Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mid-Town Lane, Salinas City Center. The event will feature the unveiling of a mural by artist Amy Burkman, celebrating Youth Orchestra Salinas (YOSAL). Guests can enjoy Taco Don Beto’s taco truck and learn about the project’s second phase, which transforms 12 panels into artwork depicting Monterey County as a connected community. The Mural Project is supported by the Central Coast Creative Corp Program, funded by the California Arts Council, which aims to partner artists with nonprofits to address civic challenges. The project continues with phase two, where artwork submissions are open for public viewing and feedback. COMMUNITY GRANTS
GONZALES — Gonzales residents and community groups who have a great idea to improve the city can apply for the Gonzales Community Action Grant and get up to $5,000 to bring their project to life. Applications are due by Sept. 6, with the grant winner announced Oct. 8. Apply via the link gonzalesca.gov/CommunityActionGrants.
BONUS BRIEF: HIGHWAY DELAYS
BIG SUR — Caltrans will continue emergency repairs on Highway 1 near the Rocky Creek Bridge, 12 miles south of Carmel, this week. Starting Tuesday, Sept. 3, through Saturday, Sept. 6, flagging crews will manage traffic to allow trucks to deliver equipment and materials. Travelers can expect intermittent daytime delays of five to 10 minutes. No overnight closures are scheduled, and all Big Sur businesses remain open. Overnight work will customarily take place five nights a week, Sunday through Thursday, and scheduled from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. No overnight work will take place on Friday or Saturday nights. The Rocky Creek viaduct project is expected to be completed by summer 2025. Highway 1 remains closed 40 miles south of Carmel due to the Regent’s Slide.
