SALINAS VALLEY — All South Monterey County high school sports will be observing a “dead period” until Monday, Aug. 5, when all fall sports except for football can begin limited contact.

Football teams can resume regular practices on Aug. 5 so players can acclimate to using football pads. On Aug. 9 the rest of the fall sports teams can have regular practices.

The dead period is a time that allows both athletes and coaches to take a break, rest and get ready for the school year.

Football teams from Gonzales, Soledad, Greenfield and King City will participate in the South County Football Jamboree on Thursday, Aug. 22, at Greenfield High School.

Local cross country teams will begin the season with a South County Jamboree on Thursday, Aug. 29, at San Lorenzo Park in King City, and volleyball teams will have sportsmanship contests with other teams from the Pacific Coast Athletic League beginning Aug. 29, as well.
