GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Bruins girls’ basketball team, who has won two straight league titles, are in a tough spot as they fight to keep their title hopes alive against a Soledad Aztecs team that currently sits in first place.
When you look at the Lady Bruins, they are becoming a basketball factory based on their rising success these past two years. Going into this season, the Bruins were once again a favorite too, but the Lady Aztecs, who made a deep run in the playoffs last year, were a team that could possibly stop the Bruins’ run.
In the past two years, Greenfield has won the Cypress and Santa Lucia league titles.
The Lady Bruins, who are 13-5 overall and 5-2 in the Mission Division, currently sit in second place. The Bruins sent messages to everyone when they started the season 8-2, and showed that they are going to be a force this year.
Going into league play, they went through their longest losing streak of the season when they dropped games to Seaside and Soledad. The good news for the Lady Bruins: their next two games are against the two teams they lost against.
The last two seasons, the Lady Bruins have only lost only one league game.
Soledad finished last season on a magical run that saw the Aztecs in the semifinals of the CCS playoffs last season. This season they are 13-4 overall and 7-1 in the Mission Division.
The only blunder came against Rancho San Juan in their league opener. Since then, the Lady Aztecs have been rolling, going on a seven-game winning streak that included a 53-34 win over the Lady Bruins.
The Lady Aztecs were able to get revenge on Rancho San Juan, and with four games left in the season, they are in the driver’s seat.
The last time the Lady Aztecs won a league title was back in 2018.
This Tuesday, Jan. 30, the Aztecs and Bruins face off in a major game in the Mission Division.
What is on the line is simple: If the Bruins lose this game, the likelihood of winning the league title this year is almost zero percent. If the Aztecs win, they will be one game away from clutching their first league title since 2018.
Soledad will travel to Greenfield on Tuesday to face the Lady Bruins at 7 p.m.
