SPCA Wildlife Center rescues anemic badger in Soledad

SOLEDAD — SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center rescued an anemic badger who was found hiding in a garage in Soledad on Aug. 19.

“We believe nearby construction scared him away from or destroyed his burrow,” stated the SPCA in a news release. “The badger was dehydrated and thin and needed help. Blood tests showed he was also anemic, so we are treating him with iron supplements and vitamin K.”

The badger is now resting and rehabilitating at the SPCA Wildlife Center, where staff will continue to monitor him and offer lots of healthy food. Then, in two weeks, they will retest his blood to see if his anemia improves.

Badgers are considered a “Species of Special Concern” in California.

The SPCA Wildlife Center is the only full-service wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center in Monterey County, rescuing over 2,500 injured, sick and orphaned wild animals every year. Right now, it is caring for 73 animals, including raccoons, opossums, gulls, snakes, songbirds, a coyote, turkeys and doves.

Anyone who sees injured or orphaned wild animals in need should call SPCA at 831-264-5427, or visit spcamc.org to learn how to help.
