SALINAS VALLEY — A new season of boys’ and girls’ soccer has begun for the high school teams in South Monterey County.
Gonzales Spartans
This season the Gonzales Spartans are off to a good start with a record of 3-0-3.
The Spartans started their season with a 4-4 tie over Palma and Soledad.
Last weekend they entered the Tom Moore Invitational, where they went 3-0-1. On the tournament’s first day, Gonzales beat Cindy Avitia, 1-0, and tied the host, Stevenson, 0-0. On day two, they beat KIPP Collegiate, 3-0, and bested Carmel, 4-1.
The Lady Spartans are off to a 1-1-0 start. Their only win came in a shootout with York, 4-3.
King City Mustangs
The defending state champions, King City Mustangs aren’t off to the best start this season. So far this season, they are 0-2-1.
The Mustangs traveled to face their South County rivals, the Soledad Aztecs, on Tuesday.
The Lady Mustangs are off to a 1-4-0 start to the season. Their lone win comes against their rivals, Gonzales, 2-1.
Soledad Aztecs
The Soledad Aztecs are off to a good start, as they are currently 1-0-1.
In their first game of the season, the Aztecs’ Elias Arreola’s lone goal was the reason they beat North Monterey County, 1-0. In their second game, they faced their rivals, the Gonzales Spartans, and were able to force a 1-1 draw.
The defending Cypress champions, the Lady Aztecs are 4-0 to start the season.
To begin the season, they entered the 16th Annual Watsonville Tournament. Throughout the entire tournament, they outscored their opponents 22-4. They beat Pajaro Valley in the championship game, 4-2.
The Lady Aztecs will face the most challenging part of their schedule this week when they face North Salinas, Alisal and Salinas High.
Greenfield Bruins
If there’s a soccer team to start paying attention to, it’s the Greenfield Bruins. So far this season, they are 5-1-1 and 1-1-1 against the Gabilan Division.
This past weekend they entered the Tom Moore Invitational. On day one, they outscored Carmel, 4-1, and then beat Salinas High, 1-0. On day two of the tournament, they won against Palma, 1-0, and Marina, 3-1.
The Bruins’ Hector Garcia has six goals to lead the team.
The Lady Bruins are one of the most improved teams in the Pacific Coast Athletic League and have already passed their win from a year ago. So far, they are 2-2-1, with wins over King City and York. Their tie came against Stevenson.
