GREENFIELD — Once again, the ladies at Greenfield High School made history when they won their first-ever softball title with an 18-0 victory over Anzar.
It’s been a historical year for the Lady Bruins, as they also won their first volleyball and basketball titles. After beating Anzar on April 29, the Greenfield team captured the Pacific Coast Athletic League’s Santa Lucia Division — their first outright softball title in school history.
“It feels amazing to win the softball title,” said Bruins player Linda Ornelas. “The girls had a major impact on us winning the title.”
The year didn’t start well for the Lady Bruins, as they began with a 1-4 record. But since then, they have gone 15-2, with their only losses since the turnaround going to Soledad and Watsonville.
“Huge shoutout to our coaches,” Ornelas said. “They helped us improve so much, and they wanted the best, and we got the best.”
Taking a look at the season stats chart will show that multiple Greenfield players have had a great year, but standing out among them is Andrea Parker, who leads the Bruins team in hits (48), triples (13) and homeruns (6).
During league play, the Lady Bruins have outscored their opponents 210 to 7. For as good as they have been with the bats, their pitching staff of Mikayla Sanchez and Ornelas have had over five no-hitters this year.
Although this has been a historic achievement for Greenfield, their time during the league play has showed that they should be placed in a higher division. In one game this year, the Bruins beat Pajaro Valley 48-0, and they have won 12 games by 10 runs or more.
Even at a time when the outcome of a win was certain, the Lady Bruins had to use their team chemistry to keep this fun and exciting.
“It does get boring, but the team atmosphere keeps the game interesting,” Ornelas said.
Greenfield is the first team in the Pacific Coast Athletic League to clinch a league title in softball this year, and with three games to go before the postseason, the Bruins will be setting a lot of records. The Lady Bruins will next play at Marina on May 3.
