GONZALES — Gonzales resident and veteran coach Alex Medina has been announced as the varsity boys basketball head coach for Gonzales High School in the upcoming 2021-22 season.
Medina last coached as the Spartan JV boys head coach during the 2018-19 season.
“I am very excited to coach the varsity boys, as I will have many players from the last team I coached moving up to varsity,” he said. “As we did not have any basketball in Gonzales during Covid-19, we have a lot of catching up to do in regards to learning new skills and building an overall program.”
Medina has coached for 11 years at Gonzales for basketball and softball teams in addition to coaching the same sports for three seasons at Soledad High School. He guided the Spartan boys and Aztec girls to the Central Coast Section playoffs.
Medina began his high school head-coaching career at Salinas High School and has over 20 years of experience in the junior college level as an assistant on the Hartnell Panther women’s basketball and softball teams.
“I have had the opportunity to coach against some of the best coaches in Monterey County over the years,” Medina said. “The teams I have coached in basketball have done well against the better programs.”
Gonzales High Athletic Director Margie Daniels is pleased with Medina’s selection as the head coach for the varsity team.
“What I love is that Alex is passionate about the game and sincerely cares for our program,” Daniels said. “I feel he will do a good job as the head coach for basketball.”
