GONZALES — The short season concluded for the Gonzales High School girls tennis team after they lost 7-0 to the Notre Dame Spirits of Salinas on May 12 in Seaside.
“Overall the last match of the season saw the team play well against a tough team,” said Gonzales girls tennis coach Rene Mendez. “The senior players especially finished their high school tennis careers playing their best match of the year. This was a challenging season, but the seniors leave being part of the best girls team over the last three years and the returning players got very valuable experience. As a coach, I am very proud of the hard work and effort provided by the girls all season.”
SINGLES RESULTS: Katherine Lipe def. Magaly Santos 1-6, 2-6; Mikayla Lorico def. Emily Franscioni 5-7, 2-6; Erin Escolta def. Monserrat Solis 0-6, 0-6; Lizzie Thorpe def. Jennifer Young 0-6, 1-6.
DOUBLES RESULTS: Gina Freese/Courtney McDonald def. Selene Renteria/Maria Hernandez 6-4, 0-6, 4-10; Kylie McKenzie/Rachel Dreyer def. Angela Rodriguez/Kimberly Pinon 2-6, 1-6; Carly Wolf/Kay Morse def. Allyah Castillo/Angela Madrigal 0-6, 0-6.
“Magaly player her best match of the season against a tough opponent,” Mendez said. “Especially in the second set, she got to deuce every game, but just couldn’t get over the hump. Similar to Magaly, Emily played her best match of the season and was a few points from winning the first set. Monserrat played well for having to step in and cover third singles for the team.”
