GREENFIELD — Those who wish to donate gently used or new coats to benefit homeless individuals in the area can do so at a festive collection container outside the Greenfield Community Science Workshop through Dec. 22.
Greenfield resident Avelina Torres is spearheading the collection project for the fourth year in a row.
“It really is to help the homeless that are in the Salinas Valley,” Torres said. “I would appreciate everyone’s help. It’s outdoors and safe.”
Torres said 70 to 80 coats are usually donated each year, but this year has started out slowly due to the pandemic. She reminded that the donation container requires no contact with others, and the location outside reduces risk. From there, coats will be cleaned before being distributed to those in need.
The main drive is for coats due to the winter cold causing a need for warmth this time of year; however, Torres said she has seen other clothing items, which are welcome.
“I’ve even gotten sweaters,” she said. “I’ve gotten clothing, which is great, because homeless can use any article of clothing.”
Torres explained coats are a better choice than blankets due to the way blankets can get dirty faster and how they can’t be readily worn like a coat for all-day warmth.
She said part of the inspiration for beginning the collection drives was driving through cities like Salinas and seeing the large numbers of people who had no warm coverings.
“This is my fourth year, and I hope to keep going until I can’t do it anymore,” Torres said.
The collection container will be placed outside the GCSW building, 45 El Camino Real, during the daytime through Dec. 22. Contact Torres at 831-674-2841 for more information.
