GONZALES — Multiple agencies celebrated the completion of a two-year repaving project on Gloria, Iverson and Johnson roads outside Gonzales during a ribbon cutting last month.
The $6 million pavement reconstruction project was a collaboration between the City of Gonzales, Monterey County and the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA).
The roads make up the route for SVSWA trucks coming from Highway 101. The pavement had not been originally designed for the huge volume of large vehicle and truck traffic and had deteriorated with potholes and pavement failures.
District 3 County Supervisor Chris Lopez and Congressman Jimmy Panetta both contracted the city to see what could be improved when the roads were brought to their attention. In addition, Misionero Vegetables along Gloria Road had contacted the city to see what could be done about the conditions.
“I was excited to take part in the ribbon cutting for the new Gloria and Iverson Road project completion,” Lopez said in an online post Oct. 30. “This project is what all our roads deserve to look like and I’m committed to continue fighting for safe infrastructure.”
Granite Construction was the contractor.
“(Granite) did an excellent job, as the project was completed ahead of schedule despite Covid-19, summer heat waves and difficulty getting some of the construction materials,” said Patrick Dobbins, public works director for Gonzales. “Their project manager was very proactive working out the issues and challenges.”
Speakers at the Oct. 29 ribbon cutting included Lopez, Gonzales Mayor Maria Orozco and Debbie Hale of Transportation Agency for Monterey County.
