GONZALES — Leadership and ASB students from Gonzales High School hosted a hygiene and sanitary item drive at Central Park last weekend to assist the victims of the recent River Fire who were ordered to evacuate their homes.
The students collected nearly two buckets full of items during their first drive event on Sept. 19, and again amassed more donations this past Saturday, Sept. 26. The drive was part of the group’s regular efforts to help their community.
“We are trying to do a community event to help someone in need every month,” said Michele Rodriguez, the activities director and ASB adviser at GHS. “Because of the recent fires, this is what we decided as a group to do, to get hygiene products for when they are evacuated from their homes and in evacuation centers.”
Rodriguez explained the group chose hygiene items in particular because of their necessity and the costly nature of obtaining them.
She said the group collected products donated by passersby during their three hours each day of the drive and then planned to take them to the local Red Cross.
