SOUTH COUNTY — King City senior distance runner Roman Munoz scored 30 points in three events to lead the Mustang to a fifth straight Mission Trail Athletic League championship on Saturday at Pacific Grove High School. The Mustangs outscored the Breakers 120 to 102.

“Roman (Munoz), was feeling better for the first time in a long time and decided to run the 800, 1600, and 3200,” said King City head coach David Daines. “He ran under two minutes in the 800, a 4:22 in the 1600, and under 10 minutes in the 3200, just really good times. If he had not run as well as he did the final results could have been different. He is one of the best runners we have ever had running three quality races like that. Our team scored in every event and that was very important.”

Munoz has been back on the track for less than a month after leg injuries forced him to take time off to recover. The distance ace looks ready to return to his dominant self just in time for the Central Coast Section semifinals.

The Mustangs also had individual league champions in Chistian Olmos in the 100 and Isidro Cabrera in the discus. Placing second and qualifying for the CCS semifinals this Saturday at Gilroy High are  Xavier Salone in the 400 and  the Mustang 4 x 100 relay team.

Winning individual championships for Soledad were: Daniel Contawe in the shot put; Ulises Camerena inthe 300 hurdles; and the Aztec 4 x 100 relay team that just edged King City for the title.

Gonzales High will be represented at the CCS semifinals by second place finishers Pablo Villasenor in the shot put and discus, Damian Acosta in the 100 and 200 meters, and Jasmin Yadao in the girls shot put and discus.

Yadao is the only female athlete to qualify for CCS in track and field this spring.

Representing Greenfield High at the CCS semifinals will be sophomore Rigo Garcia who placed second behind Munoz in the 3200 meters. The semifinals will start at 10 am on the Gilroy track. The CCS championships will be held on Friday, May 26, at Gilroy.
