GONZALES — The Carmel Padres played like defending league champions last week defeating the Gonzales Spartans by 11-1 and 10-2 scores. The losses dropped the Spartans to 4-9 in the Mission Trail Athletic League and 6-12 overall.

In the first game at Carmel the Spartans gave up 11 hits and finished with just five hits of their own and one run that was scored in the top of the sixth. In the JV contest the Padres defeated Gonzales 4-2.

“We lost but it was a good pitching performance by Alex Morga,” said Gonzales JV coach Thomas Schmidt. “We had good hitting from Jerry Ruiz.”

In the second game of the two game series the game was tied at 1-1 until the end of the third inning when the Padres outscored the Spartans 9-1. The Padres had 10 hits in the contest.

Gonzales won the JV game 10-9 and received good pitching from Michael Duby and Nick Ortiz. Vidal Franco, Alex Morga, and Izaak Ochoa led the Gonzales offense.

The Spartan teams played in Monterey yesterday against Trinity Christian and host the Warriors on Friday.
